All outfits in Battlefield use SOME version of a voice program.  Most use the two most popular ventrillo or teamspeak.  Some will be using the in game chat system that I know nothing about yet.  Ventrillo has lots of options that allow text to speech macros which travel faster than voce to wave, then back to voice.  But at WNx we use Teamspeak because of the hot keys that allow you to switch  between servers, channels, whisper to other squadmates, make channel commanders etc.

Whatever you use, there needs to be RULES when people are speaking.  It can quickly become an out of control environment where idle chat overcomes an organized squadron and people move off to other channels to avoid the noise.

There is a line between fun and too chatty, not everyone knows this line.  The important thing is to ask yourself before you state something.. “ is this something i could type in squad or outfit chat??” and more than likely it is.

Hopefully you can increase your typing skills while playing battlefield to the point where TS is only the most vital things going across it.  If not, if you are a chatty sort then it is recommended that you move to a loose chat channel where the topics can range without fear of being moderated or banned.

But on the main BF channel, try to keep your comments quick and to the point.  When there is free time (waiting for the next map, or clearly winning) its fun to joke around on TS and it’s ok too, just make sure you can put that away when it’s time to start moving towards the next goal

You, as a Commander in Battlefield 2, you will need to make a few adjustments to the way you use teamspeak.  You will reside (most of the time) in the Command Channel and receive information from the Squad Leaders Directly through command chat.  However, to respond to the separate fire teams, the commander will need to set up whisper keys to the separate rooms.  The above example uses the keypad (my personal fav because I seldom use it).

Keypad 1 whispers to fire team one, and keypad 2 (go figure) whispers to fire team two.  Keypad 3 whispers to ALL channels at once and can be used for blanket instructions.  The Commander has his own personal squad at his disposal (special ops) to run any mission he deems important.  It is VITAL that they obey the orders of the commander, as they are his physical presence on the field because his head is down over the map trying to see the bigger picture.

Teamspeak Etiquette

Using Teamspeak to separate fireteams

Firstly, TURN off the incoming / outgoing voice messages on teamspeak, they are NOT NEEDED and are ANNOYING.  You can do this in the settings / options menu on teamspeak.

You, as a soldier in Battlefield 2, will not need to change ANYTHING about the way you converse on teamspeak to be able to use the new command method.  Here is what you need to do.

If you are a Squad Leader in one of the fireteams (to the left listed as one and two, but in future they may be changed to red and blue for waypoint options and quick attack method)  You will need to set up a whisper key to all other commanders in the master channel. (see the commander/Squad Leaders marked in red for command) so you can ask for help from command, and likewise he can give you mission specific orders without spamming the entire channel

There will be two modes of teamspeak:

normal (otherwise known as idle chat) when this is in effect (as it normally is 70% of the time) anyone is free to speak about Battlefield material that is vital to the game.  No one person should talk twice in a row unless it is an emergency issue.  That rule was put in place for those who like to go on and on hitting their transmit keys endlessly about anything on their minds.  Emergencies include anything involving a contact (see below) or if the SL wants more information about something.  The exception to this is the Squad Leader / Commander who can spam chat all the vital information he needs to.  If the chat is starting to get out of hand the squad leader may call tighten up, or quiet down as a warning to keep coms clear of chatter and still maintain idle chat.

Battle chat (otherwise known as contact only chat) when the SL calls for this, TS should go totally silent except for the SL and emergency broadcasts from the team.  Battle chat can be called for at any time, but usually when under heavy enemy fire or organizing the squad for a mission is when the SL will call it.  When Called, the team will use VOICE macros and text as much as possible to get any information across.  A squad leader is not expected to say battle chat twice ever and people ignoring this order will be moved to another channel where they can talk all they want, albeit to no one.

At times the squadleaders icon on Teamspeak will be red.  This designates him as a channel commander and a subsequent hotkey can be made inside teamspeak to chat directly to him.  This is how you should get most of your ideas across to the commander when possible.
