KNEWFOLKE SONG LIST V:

Vision Quest Violin Song

Vision Quest

VERSE 1:
My father passed away just the other day.
And although it’s funny but he doesn’t seem that far away.
I had looked into his eyes. That wonderful disguise didn’t fool me anymore.
And I watched him waste away.
Reckless torture and decay, all the while wanting to get away

VERSE 2:
Now when I was a boy, back in ‘83.
My father sat down and he said to me he said...
‘Boy, son, you got to get away some day.’
He told me about the quest. Thought he knew what was best for me.
Now he’s long gone, and I’m still here.
Waiting for something that I hope and fear will come soon.

CHORUS:
Cause time has turned me into my father.
And I don’t want to die. Trapped in the middle of knowhere land.
So maybe I’ll try. Strike out, look for an answer.
But I could die. Won’t you give me a helping hand?
	Father where are you now?

VERSE 3:
Talking with my son just the other day.
And try as I might I could not convey.
I was just an old man, talking to a young man.
Ignoring the words that I had to say.

VERSE 4:
You wondered once, but now you’ll see.
Why I live my life so recklessly.
The Vision Quest still burns in me.
You shall walk the land. It’s your destiny
Open your eyes to what’s around.
And get out of this small hick town.
Move on to another place.
Either way, leave a space for me, to follow you
Just follow through with your thoughts.
With your ways.

ENDING:
Got to get away. Got to get away. Got to get away. (over & over)
Start all over again. It’s all the same.
Where do I go from here? Isn’t that the way I came.
Put on your walking shoes. Say, isn’t this good news.
Haven’t we been here before? Knock on your front door.
Playing the same song twice. Playing it safe is nice.
When the feeling comes you’ve got to. (2 times)
It’s all over, now and again.
You’ve got to come back, you’ve got to come back-ah. (3 times) Again.

Created: 1986 or 1987
Performers: Orignal demo version, Carl Park & Penni Batchlor
Information: This might just be the earliest song written, this along with What comes around are two of the first serious shots at writing some songs. Both written with a friend Penni on the floor at my mom's house over either the summer of 86 or 87, I can't remember which. The Idea of Vision Quest comes from my sister nancy telling me what a vision quest was (ignore the movie). Searching for something that you know not what. This is our typical ending song.

Violin Song

VERSE 1:
Time will catch up with you and tell you what you should do
And where will you go, what will you do when time, has it’s way with you

VERSE 2:
Love is all you have left.
Even if the world were dying
You’d still have your have your sense around you
To let go of what you don’t really need

CHORUS:
Love is all you have today (twice)

VERSE 3:
Lost again, lost again in a world
So very uncaring, and so very unkept
You’d better hire a maid, to tidy up around your soul and your conscience
Your conscience, your conscience

CHORUS:
Love is all you have today. You gave everything else away
How very noble for you to stand and say
That love is all you have left

BRIDGE:
Oh no, everything comes to an end
Oh no, what will you do to overthrow your heart
What will you do to overthrow your heart
When love is all you have and there’s nothing left to do
Just put your faith in me, I’ll place my faith in you

VERSE 4:
And in the end everything will turn out exactly as you planned
About face and return to your point of destination, destination
For you the only one who really cares

Created: 1995
Performers: Carl & Paul on Kettle drums, Demo version,
Information: Using the SD1's neto violin sounds I created an almost orchestral piece, not unlike Stay. All the lyrics were written in one single shot when I pressed play and needed something there so I made up stuff, and ended up keeping it. Being unsure whether or not the song was keepable I recieved backup from Ange and Paul Horener saying that indeed it was cooler than being poked in the eye with a sharp stick. And they were right!
